Lauren Martin, Esq. is the Vice President, Deputy General Counsel at The American
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), where she provides strategic
legal counsel and related risk management advice for the ASPCA programs and
infrastructure teams.
Ms. Martin supervises the corporate attorneys and compliance professionals in the ASPCA’s Legal Department and oversees the team’s legal work related to contracts, intellectual property, labor and employment, and other legal matters for the ASPCA. Ms. Martin also provides support to the Finance Committee of
the ASPCA Board of Directors; ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws
and internal policies; trains staff on legal and risk-related issues; provides legal counsel
for litigation matters; and, with the Chief Legal Officer, oversees the ASPCA’s insurance
portfolio.
Ms. Martin served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Animal Law in the Veterinary Forensics program at the University of Florida and served as an adjunct professor at St. John’s University School of Law, where she taught Animal Law to second-and third-year law students and advised students satisfying their advanced writing requirement. Ms. Martin co-authored a chapter titled “Financial Issues:
Fundraising, Tax, Investments, and Real Estate,” in the book Guide to Representing Animal Protection Organizations, a first-of-its-kind legal reference book published by the
American Bar Association for legal practitioners supporting animal welfare
organizations. She is currently co-authoring a chapter addressing legal issues in a
forthcoming revised edition of the Shelter Medicine for Veterinarians and Staff
veterinary textbook. She has also published journal articles related to animals and the
law.
Prior to joining the ASPCA, Ms. Martin worked at the law firm of Willkie Farr & Gallagher where her work focused on hedge funds and commodity pools.
