Analysis: Master List of US Shelters and Rescues

Introduction
In partnership with Adopt-A-Pet, Shelter Animals Count has developed a master list of approximately 13,000 shelters and rescues across the United States. Shelter Animals Count conducted an analysis of this master list to understand the distribution of organizations by state, region, organization type.
The South Atlantic and Pacific regions have the highest portion of organizations across the country.

2/3 of organizations in the country are rescue organizations (i.e. foster-based, privately funded). Brick-and Mortar organizations are only 1/3 of organizations across the country.
