Shelter Animals Count is a new, collaborative initiative formed by a diverse group of stakeholders to create and share a national database of sheltered animal statistics, providing facts, and enabling insights that will save lives.

Janelle Dixon

Janelle Dixon has served the organization for 22 years joining the Humane Society of Ramsey County as a Volunteer Coordinator in 1991 and serving as Executive Director from 1999 to 2007. During her tenure, she enlarged the organization and increased its assets 40% through the merging of the Humane Society of Ramsey County and the St. Croix Animal Shelter. In 2000, these organizations became the Humane Society for Companion Animals (HSCA). Dixon was part of the team that led the effort to merge the Animal Humane Society, HSCA and Greater West Metro Humane Society and has served as President and CEO since the 2007 merger.

In her role as CEO of AHS Dixon co-founded the Minnesota Animal Welfare Partnership (MnPAW), founded the Minnesota Horse Welfare Coalition and serves of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine’s Dean’s Advisory Council.

Dixon is engaged on a national level in the animal welfare industry. Dixon serves on the board of Pet Shelters Across America, as board chair of the National Federation of Humane Societies and as board member and treasurer for Shelter Animals Count. Additionally Dixon serves on the Companion Animal Advisory Council for HSUS and is a member of the Society of Animal welfare Administrators.

Dixon also serves as CEO of the Animal Humane Society’s for-profit enterprise, Now Boarding, a pet boarding and daycare business. Prior to entering the humane society profession, Dixon served as Manager of Training and Development for XICOR, Inc. in Milpitas, CA from 1987 to 1990. She holds a BA in journalism from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dixon has completed advanced leadership training in programs at the University of St. Thomas and Leadership St. Paul and a St. Paul Chamber of Commerce program.
