Intake Metrics
Definition: Total animals entering the shelter
Best Practices/Considerations When Using:
– Typically used when looking at shelter-level data
Definition: Total animals entering the shelter minus transfers in from all agencies
Best Practices/Considerations When Using:
– Typically used when aggregating intakes at state/region/national levels to prevent “double-counting” of animals being transferred after initial intake type
– Assumes that animals being transferred were already accounted for in another intake type by another organization also in the dataset
Intake Sources
Definition: Animal is brought in by a community member
Acronyms or AKA: OTC, Public Drop-off
Definition: Animal is brought into the shelter by an animal control officer or other member of law enforcement
Acronyms or AKA: ACO Pick Up
Intake Types
Definition: Stated to be unowned, free-roaming or reported to be abandoned by owner
Definition: Admitted by owner, including adoption returns.
Definition: Admission from another agency within the same state.
Definition: Admission from another agency in a different state.
Definition: Admission from another agency outside of the US.
*Data Entry Best Practice: Currently, any animals transferred in from the US territory of Puerto Rico should be counted in this category.
Definition: Pets impounded during cruelty cases or for protective custody. This does not include animals picked up as stray or surrendered by owners.
Definition: Pets born while in care and other types of admission not captured above.
Definition: Pets relinquished by owners with the intention to be euthanized. When provided as a service through a clinic outside of intake, it should not be included here.
