In honor of Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, we’re celebrating the 13,000+ organizations powering adoptions across the U.S. Here is some recent adoption distribution data that we’re able to share thanks to the thousands of organizations across the country who contribute their data to Shelter Animals Count — giving us a nationwide picture of where adoptions are happening, how many lives are being saved, and just how vital every organization is, no matter their size:
More than half of animal shelters and rescues adopt out fewer than 100 pets per year — and every single one counts.
42.1% of organizations adopt out between 101-1,000 pets a year.
Whether they adopt out 20 pets or 20,000, each organization plays a critical role in our national story.
According to our 2024 year end report, 4.1 million animals were adopted into loving homes.
At Shelter Animals Count, we use data to highlight their efforts and appreciate all that these organizations do to save lives in their communities. Behind every number is a pet who found a home — and a team who made it possible.
