SEATTLE — In late November, Greater Good Charities announced a partnership with Wag! and DonateStock to facilitate the delivery of millions of pet meals to animal shelters and rescues across the United States over the holidays.
According to Shelter Animals Count (SAC), more animals have entered shelters than those who have found homes and left so far in 2022. There have been approximately 7.3% more pets entering shelters than leaving them, according to SAC, and 2022 has seen the highest rate of stray dogs and owner-surrendered cats entering shelters compared to the last four years.
“Pet food is the number one expense for animal shelters,” said Liz Baker, chief executive officer of Greater Good Charities. “These food donations will help free up dollars to allow shelters to use funds in other critical ways, like medical care and supplies.
And, in Ukraine, pet food donations are a matter of life and death for shelter pets and can make a difference in a pet owner’s ability to continue caring for their own pets.” Through DonateStock, Wag! will allocate a portion of proceeds from its Community Shares Program, matching Giving Tuesday donations dollar-for-dollar for up to one million meals, according to Greater Good.
The donations will benefit US pet organizations as well as those impacted by the war in Ukraine. “We’re honored to continue our work with Greater Good Charities to provide healthy meals to pets in need across the country and in Ukraine,” said Garrett Smallwood, CEO and chair of Wag!. “We are passionate about making sure all pets have the resources they need to live healthy, happy lives and hope our efforts here can help create better futures for these pets.”
Wag! has partnered with Greater Good Charities since 2017 and have since donated more than 16 million meals to shelters in need.
