North Beach PAWS saw a record number of dogs and cats in 2022, the shelter said in a media release on Tuesday.
NB PAWS is a private, no-kill animal shelter dedicated to saving unwanted dogs and cats.
In 2022, it saw 1,360 cats and 179 dogs from Ocean Shores, Hoquiam, Aberdeen, and other rural areas in Grays Harbor County. That is a 30% growth from 2021 in veterinary care, procedures, transfers, and adoptions, the shelter said.
“Our small shelter has done an extraordinary job in providing a safe place for dogs and cats when they need us the most,” said North Beach PAWS Vice President Carol Jamroz. “We have an all-volunteer staff that is passionate about the animals in our care and will always go that extra mile to save as many dogs and cats as possible. Our partnerships with several no-kill shelters in more populated areas helps us to relocate cats and dogs and get them into loving homes more quickly. This frees up space for even more animals that need a safe place to go.”
In 2022, NB PAWS also worked with law enforcement to rescue over 150 animals from cruelty and neglect.
According to Shelter Animals Count, there were 100,000 more cats and dogs facing euthanasia in the U.S. in 2022 compared to 2021.
Although it seemed like more people were adopting during the pandemic, dog and cat adoptions actually declined in 2022. Shelters around the U.S. are packed to capacity and are understaffed, said Shelter Animals Count.
NB PAWS is committed to saving the lives of cats and dogs and finding them a permanent home. The shelter will continue promoting the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats, to reduce overpopulation, and keep focusing on educating the community about responsible pet ownership, NB PAWS said.
